Evidence suggests that Asia’s turtles are being systematically extirpated from nature to feed the insatiable demand from export markets. According to some estimates, as many as 15 million turtles are traded annually in the region, most of these ending up in China where the country’s rapidly developing economy has generated demand for expensive foods and traditional medicines made from turtles. Of an estimated 90 species that are native to the region, more than 50% are listed as "Critically Endangered" or "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. Read More...  

The Asian Turtle Conservation Network (ATCN)  was established in 2003, to help develop and promote turtle conservation efforts in Asia, particular emphasis is placed upon providing a means to share information and improve communication amongst those of us working with turtles in the region. The website includes brief profiles of all major turtle projects and efforts underway in the region, an online turtle reference library, the latest news relevant to turtles (updated weekly), and an online field guide to Asian turtle species.

Efforts to Save the Species: Rafetus on the Move in China
A quick update from the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) on efforts to bring the world’s only known captive Rafetus swinhoei together in hopes that the pair will breed.

Naming one of the world’s rarest chelonians, the southern Batagur
A paper published in 2008 splits Batagur baska into two species; Batagur baska historically distributed from Pakistan to Myanmar and Batagur affinis, distributed in the southern Malay peninsula and Sumatra.  The taxonomic identification of Batagur in northern Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia remain unclear.

Successful turtle and python rescue along the Cambodian-Thai border
A press release on the seizure of 418.5 kg of turtles and pythons by wildlife protection officers representing three native species; Hieremys annandalii, Cuora amboinensis, and Malayemys subtrijuga. 
ATCN NOTE:  Wildlife Alliance incorrectly asserts in their press release that Hieremys annandalii is a species of cultural importance in Cambodia and carvings are inscribed on the walls of Angkor temples.  In fact, Batagur baska is the species considered of cultural importance in Cambodia, known as the Royal Turtle and found on the walls of Angkorian temples.
